De vlucht van The Rocket voert de jonge, Belgische poppunkband niet naar een andere planeet. In het openingsnummer van de debuutplaat wordt gerept over ‘a mission to move your feet’, gevolgd door: ‘We’re not here to change the world, we are here to prove that entertainment can be cheap’. Die laatste kreet blijkt een understatement. Niet alleen wagen de heren zich tegen het einde van het album aan een cheesy poppunkbewerking van Vengaboys-hit Boom Boom Boom Boom, ook spelen ze openlijk leentjebuur bij Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Motion City Soundtrack en The Ataris.
Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, handelen bijna alle teksten van deze in schooluniformen geklede groep over vriendinnetjes, liefde en stukgelopen relaties. Toch verdient The Rocket ook de nodige credits, alleen al vanwege de muzikale afkomst van drie van de vijf leden (Gino’s Eyeball, Second Base). Maar vooral ook omdat de band met zijn poppy punkrock, catchy songs, frisse keyboards en Less Than Jake-achtige vocalen een heerlijk onbekommerde sfeer creëert. Wa-hoo, c'est cool ça ! C'est sur Vagrant ? Drive Thru ? Hopeless ? Ils viennent du New Jersey ? De l'Ohio ? Ah c'est sur Funtime (Homer, Sedan Vault, PN, ExitOnTheLeft...) et il viennent d'Antwerp ! Gosh. Ça tue. Bon c'est quand même masterisé au Blasting Room...

Voilà qui va encore élever mon capital sympathie pour la Belgique (qui est déjà à 127 %)... Quel pays génial, le 52ème état... The Rocket, ils tombent direct dans mon panier à trucs cools venant de chez les amis de l'autre côté de la frontière, avec la Kriek, les blondes athlétiques aux yeux bleus d'1 m 80, les restos vegan, les festivals qui démontent... et les groupes qui me poinçonnent la tronche, Rise & Fall, Amen Ra, Tenement Kids, Jerusalem The Black, Octopussys, Malibu Stacy (les Weezer au coin de la rue ou presque)... ouais rien à voir tout ça et justement !!! Bref si vous vous pissez dessus au premier riff de Saves The Day, si vous vous roulez par terre sur une intro des Get Up Kids, si vous bavez de façon incoercible à la simple évocation de Motion City Soundtrack, essayez The Rocket. De la pop à son top les gars, des refrains qui retournent la cervelle, un son qui latte, des claviers qui embaument le James Dewees... la classe... 11 petites perles poppy, dont un tube absolu, imparable, qui rend fou: "Mount Everest ". Deux tubes en fait. "Katie" c'est idem.

Af en toe blaast er een nieuwe wind door punkrockland. Nu ja, wind... In het geval van The Rocket mag je terecht van een windhoos spreken!

Vlaanderen heeft er sinds kort een punkrockband met poppy sound bij: The Rocket. De band bestaat uit twee ex-leden van Gino's Eyeball en nog drie andere getalenteerde muzikanten. Ze wonnen rock rally na rock rally en speelden al veel zalen plat. Nu is ook hun debuutalbum uit, tijd voor ons dus om eens te checken of ze werkelijk zo goed zijn als we horen vertellen!

Catchy en vrolijk

De plaat valt meteen met de deur in huis met het catchy Up Up Up & Away. Als ze zingen "get up and dance", dan moeten we ons dit geen twee keer laten vertellen. Toegegeven, als opener kan dit nummer zeker tellen! De vrolijke punkrocksongs volgen elkaar in sneltempo op. Waiting bijvoorbeeld. Of de leuke meezinger Tommy Teabag.

Leuke keuze is ook de cover van Vengaboys' Boom Boom Boom Boom. Goed gezien, want deze catchy song kan het hele publiek alvast luidkeels meebrullen. De stem van zanger Tom is een echte punkrocksong die ons soms zelfs doet denken aan Less Than Jake. Dit laatste uiteraard geheel als compliment bedoeld. Vrijwel alle nummers op het album gaan over liefde en relaties, een veelgebruikt onderwerp voor punkrockmuziek. Dit werkt ook voor The Rocket prima!

Een unieke toetsensound

Zeer opvallend voor deze plaat is het veelvuldig gebruik van keybordpartijen. Dit geeft The Rocket een unieke sound. Ook de rest van de instrumenten zoals de drums en gitaren zitten meer dan goed. Zijn deze jongens echt nog maar aan hun debuutalbum toe?

De nummers steken goed in elkaar, de bandleden zijn duidelijk prima op elkaar afgestemd en aan het beeldmateriaal te zien, vermaken ze zich ook geweldig op het podium. Onze gok is dat The Rocket het nog ver zal schoppen als ze verder gaan waar ze mee bezig zijn.

Very friendly, sunny and poppy punkrock is what, more or less, has been the backbone of Funtime records. Later in the labels discography we were spoiled by hard hitting and sometimes highly original bands like PN, Killbots or recently Dick Black. The Rocket is neither hard nor original. And though the Belgian band has an amazing singer and good tunes they sound too much like The Ataris with a slight NOFX and Millencolin edge. The band members have paid their dues in Gino’s Eyeball and Second Base. It’s that lack of originality which takes the sting out of this band. Live it’s going to be a blast and huge Flemish festivals like Groezrock or Pukkelpop need to grab the phone, but I’m still sitting in my chair barely moving my feet, when I should be slamming around the room… Martijn Welzen

THE ROCKET 'the rocket' funtime records

The Rocket from Belgium have only been recently founded by former members of Gino’s Eyeball and Skyrocket John. Furthermore The Rocket is also the second band of the vocalist in Second Base who are also signed to Funtime Records. Here he is in charge of the guitar and backing vocals. The band plays on their debut wonderful melodic punk rock that makes the sun shine even when the weather’s crappy outside.

They are very clearly inspired by the second half of the Nineties, with their fun emanating music reminding strongly of Blink 183, No Fun At All,… The list could go on and on, and even though one can accuse The Rocket of lacking originality, this shouldn’t really be a complaint in this present case. They have such an easygoing and uncomplicated approach to their music that listening has to be a pleasant experience. The songs contain the flair of the Nineties pop punk scene and could even work as a soundtrack for an indie college movie or an arcade racer game. Even the keyboards don’t disturb and add another melodic component. There is an undeniable commercial appeal, with such a catchy touch that you want to sing along already during your first time into the album. I especially like the slightly melancholic Tommy Teabag and the good humoured Perfect Landing. There is no single weak moment as every item comes with its own class. The Rocket even cover Boom Boom Boom Boom, making wickedly fun of the Dutch euro pop band Venga Boys.

It’s just a shame that the album ends already after a good half hour. Those who are into classical melodic punk – a genre not so fashionable these days anymore – will find their luck with The Rocket.

When PunkRock act Skyrocket John decided to split in the Summer Of 2007 because it became increasingly difficult to synchronize each member’s schedule in such a way that the band could rehearse and/or do gigs, it left drummer Rogier De Vries and bassist/ backing singer Joris Goetstouwers with an empty feeling they absolutely wanted to fill again! Luckily for them, Gino’s Eyeball members Tom De Ridder (lead vocals & guitar) and Geoff Van Calster (with G’s E he plays the bass & does additional vocals) were willing to join a new project, the latter changing his normal instrument for keyboards…for the intent was to have a Poppy PunkRock act with added synth & keyboards sounds (or as they say themselves in the opening track of their album, “We’re not here to change the world, we are here to prove that entertainment can be cheap”…and so The Rocket came into life during Summer 2008!

Cited influences in those days include Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, New Found Glory, Weezer, and…hold onto your caps, boys and girls…Vengaboys! Indeed, that Dutch EuroDance/Techno quartet which was so darn popular in the late ‘90s and early years of the new millenium! After a while Second Base’s frontman Stijn Debontridder was equally found willing to join, bringing in the second guitar and extra backing vocals! In other words, what you get here is a bunch of awefully commercial PopPunk songs with singalong melodies! One songs sounds almost like the other, and when I first listened to the album I was quite annoyed with the frontman’s constant high-pitch of a voice! However, when listening to the album through headphones, my attention shifted somewhat towards the keyboard incertions, and I indeed became less annoyed with the singing style! And towards the end of the album the boys even cover the Vengaboys hit song “Boom Boom Boom Boom”, which to me becomes the highlight of the album! After having given the album a couple more spins in the cd-player, I have to admit that every song on the album has the potential to become a sing-along session during live gigs. Personally, my favourite tracks remain that album opening “Up Up And Away”, “The Neverending Story” (silly love song theme), “Tommy Teabag” (mainly because the title attracted my attention first), and of course that cover track (which I’ve been humming all day now, although rather with the original female vocals in mind, heheh)!

The Rocket is a young 5-piece Belgium poppy punkrock band inspired by bands as The Ataris, Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 with Geoff and Tom from Gino’s Eyeball on keyboards and vocals and Stijn from Second Base on guitar. In October 2009 they released their self-titled debut album on Funtime Records.

And funtime it is with The Rocket because it is all about entertainment and melodic poppunk music. The good thing about this band is that they are not your typical punkrock band. The key elements to their sound and appearance are the bands gimmicks: the nerdy uniforms (probably inspired by bands as Me First And The Gimme Gimme Gimmes) and the keyboards. The keys brings an eighties pop vibe into their sound. Add a Venga Boys cover and some whooows to the package and you got it. The more I spin this record the more I like it. Good debut from this promising band.

The Rocket werd in 2007 opgericht door Tom en Geoff van Gino’s Eyeball die het idee kregen om een nieuwe band op te richten waar Geoff de keyboards hanteert. In een jarenhalf hebben ze een 50-tal shows gespeeld en hebben ze een dik contract binnen met Funtime Records. Geen slappe kak en een geweldige start voor een relatief jonge band.

Ok, keyboards, in een punkrockscène? Dat klinkt inderdaad niet zoals we dat gewoon zijn. Hoewel de meesten wel open staan voor iets nieuws in plaats van steeds dezelfde bezettingen te moeten aanhoren. Bij het eerste nummer van de plaat ‘Up Up Up & Away’ hoor je ook direct dat The Rocket een frisse wind lijkt te zijn in de scène waar deze muzikanten uit voortkomen. De perfecte zomerplaat – misschien komt deze plaat net iets te laat uit? Met invloeden als Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy en Blink 182 kan je toch niet mislopen? De aangename deuntjes verpakt in een poppunk geheel doet me zelfs af en toe denken aan het vroegere werk van Cobra Starship en consoorten. De eerste helft van de plaat is aangenaam, maar er moet gewoon wat gesleuteld worden aan de balans om alles netjes over te laten komen. Niettegenstaande dat dit een ijzersterke debuutplaat is waar ze een breder publiek mee gaan bereiken en die zeker en vast wat airtime kunnen veroveren. ‘Tommy Teabag’ is de track waar het meeste over zal gesproken worden en dit kan zeker soliciteren als ‘single’. Wat me het meeste opvalt is dat het vocale gedeelte strakker klinkt dan bij Gino’s Eyeball of misschien sla ik hier de bal volledig mis?

Must-have plaat. Een waardige revolutie in de Funtime punkrockfamilie en voorzien van schitterende artwork (John Meloche). Een foute ‘jaren-90’ cover van de Venga Boys *gniffel*
Op het podium te zien in strakke pakjes en voorzien van de nodige ‘whooows’.

Up up and away! Dat moeten de gasten van The Rocket toch gedacht hebben toen ze aan hun project begonnen. Amper een jaar geleden kwamen leden van o.a. Gino’s Eyeball, Empty Vie, Skyrocket John en Second Base bijeen en besloten ze om aan poppunk te doen.

Vandaag presenteren ze u, met wat hulp van Funtime Records, hun debuutplaat. De release is gepland op 10 oktober in Aarschot. Be there, ‘cause you don’t want to miss that launch.
Up Up and Away had evengoed het verhaal van het ontstaan van The Rocket kunnen zijn. Verwacht jullie maar aan een cd’tje vol poppunktunes en feel good vibes. “On A Mission To Move Your Feet”

“The Rocket” is zo’n atypische debuutplaat, je voelt en hoort vanaf de eerste nummers dat de leden van de groep al ervaring hebben in het opnemen van platen, in het bespelen van hun instrumenten en in het leggen van de juiste klemtonen op de juiste momenten.

Valt er iets op deze cd aan te merken dan? Toch wel, Na een tijdje krijg je zo een beetje het gevoel dat alle nummers ietwat op elkaar gelijken. Overal is er dat 'vervelende' achtergrondgezoem van de electronica die de groep gebruikt. Het luistert allemaal wel wat ruimteachtig, maar voor mij mocht het gerust weggelaten worden. Enkel bij 'I’m Gold', 'Perfect Landing' en 'Boom Boom Boom Boom' komt het goed uit en biedt het een meerwaarde aan het nummer. Laat dat weg en je hebt een plaatje die menig poppunk-liefhebber zal smaken.

'Boom Boom Boom Boom' is een ietwat atypische cover -waarom ook niet op een atypisch debuutalbum- van het gelijknamige nummer van The Venga Boys. Als dit bij liveoptredens niet voor een feestje zal zorgen, dan weet ik het ook niet meer. Ook als je geen fan was van de originele versie, zal je ongetwijfeld wel meezingen met deze "gepoppunkte" versie. Poppunk goes ‘90’s op zijn best zou ik zo zeggen.

Potentiële hitjes op deze cd zijn ongetwijfeld 'Read Message Lite' en 'The Neverending Story'. Een andere conclusie is dat het wellicht allemaal wel meezingers zullen worden na verloop van tijd. Iets waarop de leden van de band wellicht zullen op hopen.

Besluit:Fans van o.a. Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory en -hoe kan het ook anders- The Venga Boys zullen deze debuutplaat wel smaken.

Ik vind dat er nog net iets meer variatie in de cd mag komen, maar dat deze warm onthaald zal worden staat als een raket boven water.
Zijn ze geslaagd in hun missie om onze voetjes te doen bewegen? Live zal dat zeker wel het geval zijn en ook op plaat heb je de neiging om mee te doen, al moet het gezegd worden dat de plaat bij mij niet speciaal blijft hangen.
