Biography

This Is A Standoff -- A name almost as long as the distance that separates these four guys. Although formed from opposite sides of the country, this band still manages to get together to write music, tour, and even have a beer or two from time to time.

In 2005 after the demise of one of Canada's hardest working punk bands, Belvedere, Steve and Graham were set on starting a new project and getting back on the road. In the summer of 2006, they recruited John (Forty Cent Fix) all the way from Ottawa. For over a month, Steve and John spent their time working construction, watching The Sopranos, and writing some hot blazing tracks.

In November, the band released two demo songs, "Silvio" and "Better Than All Of Us", through their Myspace page, and received an overwhelming response from listeners worldwide. With the addition of Corey (Deville, Inventing The Wheel) on bass, the band had been hard at work writing and rehearsing twelve songs, which were to appear on a record later sometime in 2008.

In april of this year, the band tested out all the songs on their first tour to europe. These were actually their first shows ever as a band. The tour was amazing and a great way to get things going. They quickly went back to Canada and recorded their debut album which was released October 9th, 2008 on Funtime records in the Benelux and Denmark.

The album is titled "Be Excited" and be sure that the band is very excited about getting back on the road as soon as they can. Be excited, because This Is A Standoff is a force to be reckoned with live, as they proved on their second European tour in April 2008. The band made jaws drop from Belgium (Riorock amongst other great shows) to Italy and in every country inbetween (as a matter of speech). They can't wait to meet you on the road!

CD 2007 Funtime Records
After the demise of Canada's Belvedere, Steve and Graham started a new project: This is a Standoff. This is a Standoff starts where Belvedere left. 'Be excited' is the bands debut album and Funtime Records releases it in the Benelux and Denmark. Be excited is for me almost the ideal punkrock album but unfortunately sometimes the poppy elements get the speed and the punk out of it. In about 31 minutes you get twelve fast, catchy and melodic punkrock songs. This band has got the energy, the speed, the technicality and the skills to write good songs and they did. I can conclude that this album rocks from the beginning till the end without losing interest but hopefully they skip the use of softer parts and poppy elements and focus more on fast forward punkrock. Be Excited certainly is not a bad way to get your name out. 7.5/10

Doet 1997 weer vers klinken!

This is a standoff is ontstaan uit de assen van Belvedere, een van de beste punkrockbands die Canada ooit heeft voortgebracht, en ze pikken de draad op daar waar Belvedere hem had laten liggen. Twaalf beukende punkrocknummers mooi samengebundeld onder de titel 'Be exited'. En dat zijn we!
Aan de basis van This is a standoff ligt het Zweedse punkrockhandboek, editie1997. Snelle riffs, een hoop stops en starts en een stem die nog eens puur natuur klinkt. We kunnen het hebben over de leuke breakdown in 'Silvio', de aanstekelijke gitaarriff waarmee 'Dream Beater' van start gaat of het catchy refrein in 'Where I can't be heard', ze grijpen allemaal terug naar de tijd waarin Zweden de standaard bepaalde van hoe punkrock moest klinken. De melodieën van zanger Steve Rawles - die over een bijzonder klare schreeuwstem beschikt - grijpen er naar terug en hij heeft zelfs het Zweedse accent dat Millencollin zo typeert onder de knie.

Weinig origineel? Toch niet. Er zitten natuurlijk een hoop clichés in, maar het klinkt zeker niet als een recyclage. Ze doen 1997 terug vers klinken en daar zijn we hun bijzonder dankbaar voor. 'Be exited' is vers van de pers, maar neemt je mee terug naar de tijd waarin het woord emo enkel sloeg op bands als Christie Front Drive en Sunny Day Real Estate. This is a standoff weigert de verplichte passage langs een trieste balade en rolt van begin tot einde lekker door aan een heel hoog bpm.

Twaalf nummers, geen enkel nummer dat moet onderdoen voor een ander nummer, maar spijtig genoeg ook geen enkel nummer dat boven het andere uitsteekt. Aan ‘Be exited' heb je een leuke partner voor een half uurtje frisse en vrolijke punkrock zonder gezwijm. En van die halve uurtjes kan je er nooit genoeg hebben.

This Is A Standoff - Be Excited

This a Standoff pikt de draad weer op waar Belvedère hem heeft laten liggen. Het toevoegen van extra melodietjes en catchy refreintjes is misschien de verklaring waarom deze MySpace-band zoveel succes kent. Na hun tour in Europa keken veel mensen uit naar hun debuutalbum. Nu het album uit is kan ik met blijdschap in het hart zeggen dat het niet teleurstelt. Ze zijn het bewijs dat MySpace mooie dingen kan doen met talent.

De invloeden van Belvedère zijn duidelijk merkbaar, maar toch klinkt This is a Standoff anders. Zo zijn de vocals en de teksten er mooi op vooruitgegaan. Ook het metal/hardcore aspect is weggevallen, wat vooral het luisterplezier bevordert.

Het album telt 12 nummers. Ze zijn wel allemaal van korte duur want in totaal heb je slechts een goed half uur muziek. Jammer omdat de cd eigenlijk te snel op zijn einde is. Een voordeel is dan weer dat het album erg dynamisch klinkt.

Het is moeilijk om stil te zitten bij het beluisteren van dit album, de groep heeft een zeer energieke sound. De snelheid en de technische kunde blijft behouden, wat de fans als muziek in de oren klinkt. De ene prachtige gitaar-riff volgt de andere snel op met heerlijke drums, echte goeie punkrock.

Het album bereikt zijn climax met het laatste übervette Dream Beater, wat zo mogelijk nog beter is dan het eerste nummer van het album. De band klinkt zeer constant, je krijgt nooit het gevoel dat er nummers opstaan gewoon om de plaat vol te krijgen. Hopelijk blijven ze dit volhouden in de toekomst.

This Is A Standoff - Be Excited

After Belvedere - one of Canda's hardest working punk bands - broke up two of its members went on to form This Is A Standoff. So it can't come as a surprise that this band sounds a lot like Belvedere. Fast, technical punkrock with one difference. It doesn't sound as metallic anymore as Belvedere did. But you get a shitload of catchy choruses instead. Which by all means is a good trade. If you're into solid punkrock, make sure to pick up your copy tomorrow. And to the sad-looking girl on the cover, be excited!
